The Housing Authority of the Township of North Bergen (NBHA) offers public housing to help low-income families find a decent, affordable, and safe place to live. NBHA owns, rents, and manages 985 low-income public housing units and provides rental assistance to an additional 420 low-income families throughout the Township of North Bergen. NBHA has approximately 35 staff members.

 

The Challenge

 

NBHA needed a cost-effective way to replace an aging phone system while reducing associated costs and maintenance headaches.  They were also looking to increase the speed of their Internet connection while bringing together five remote locations.

 

The Solution

 

Reynwood's analysis team conducted a thorough review of NBHA’s existing phone system and network infrastructure. The team determined that Managed Communications Service, MCS, was a solution that would readily meet North Bergen’s requirements. MCS carries voice and data over a single, private network to deliver a powerful phone service that’s fully managed off-premise by Reynwood. To connect five remote locations Reynwood chose to deploy a wireless Motorola Canopy solution as a commissioned follow-on project.

 

The Result

 

Reynwood replaced NBHA’s current phone system with MCS for 33 users and installed two T1 circuits (one for redundancy) to provide a full 3 Mbps connection to the Internet. NBHA reduced their telecom costs by over 30%, increased Internet speed five fold, and eliminated management costs and issues related to their previous phone system. Most moves, adds and changes are now quick, free and easy while a web-interface makes managing individual calling features a breeze. The wireless solution delivered network connectivity to all remote locations allowing for full integration of phone connectivity, central monitoring of all security systems and PC connectivity to the main office.
